Adam’s First Wife – Lilith- Parshas Bereishis

Written by Rabbi Rudman, 25/10/2019

There are a number of places in Chazal, where there is a reference to a consort of Adam before the Chavah of the Written Torah. Sometimes she is referred to as ‘The First Chava’[1]; and sometimes she is given a name- Lilith[2]. The one place the name Lilith is mentioned in Tanach is in Isaiah[3], as a sign of desolation and emptiness. Rashi there[4] even refers to her as a female ‘Shed’. The regular translation of Shed is demon, but since in our Christian based language the connotation and understanding are incorrect, it needs clarification.

This Chazal has been used in various contexts outside of Torah discussion, and requires clarification as to the Torah approach. I hope what I write here, is correct and will be understood correctly. There need to be certain introductions to begin with.

There is a disagreement in the Gemarra[5] as to when the creation of the world took place. R Eliezer says it was Tishrei, and R Yehoshua says it was Nisssan. It seems difficult to understand how there can be so basic a disagreement. Especially since where this is relevant to Halacha, we act according to both opinions. On Rosh HaShanah we say, “Today (in Tishrei) is the conception of the world.” That is like R’ Eliezer. But when we say Birchas Hachama which is the representation of the sun as it was the first day it was created, we do it in Nissan, like R’ Yehoshua.

Tosafos answers[6] that as in any Machlokes which is L’Shem Shamayim, both are the words of Elokim Chaim, and reconciles these two opinions. The Ariz”l also reconciles them in a similar way[7]. Their explanation is that based on the Chazal that in the beginning HaShem desired to create the world with the attribute of Din-strict justice. When He saw that the world could not exist like that, He joined it with the Midah of Rachamim. This is not that Chalilah, HaShem changed His mind. Rather, the first creation was the conception of a complete world. The second was a world that was incomplete, and that an incomplete human is obligated to strive to complete to bring the world to completion. (See R’Tzadok in Pri Tzadik[8].)

Thus, Tishrei is the realm of the conception, the thought. And that is why it is the day of Din- the days of judgement. Nissan is when HaShem redeemed us from Egypt. And as we say in the Hagada[9], we were unclothed and stripped of Mitzvoth. HaShem needed to use the attribute of mercy to redeem us. Therefore, both opinions are correct. The disagreement is which is the primary aspect of creation, and which is secondary.

Our responsibility is to take the incomplete world that requires miracles and Rachamim to exist, and bring into an existence of Din. The Safas Emes observes[10], that even though that seems an almost insurmountable task; in Machsava- the realm of thought- we are obligated to reach there, even if in action we cannot. We are to live in both realms. The realm of Machshava of Tishrei, where we are perfect; and the realm of Nissan, where we require the Rachamim to continue to exist.

R’ Tzadok extends this idea in the following manner. The Mishnah says that HaShem created the world with ten utterances. However, when you count them there are only nine. There is a disagreement between the Gemarra and the Zohar which is the missing one. The Gemarra says the missing one is Bereishis; while the Zohar counts when HaShem says, “It is not good for man to be alone”, as the tenth. This is another variation on the two levels of creation. Bereishis is the original creation where everything was perfect. The other possibility is in the world of “Not good”, where things are not perfect and require repair. These are the same two sides as to understanding when the world was created.

I would like to use this framework to explain the idea of ‘The First Chava’, or Lilith. As we brought above, she is referred to as a Shed. What is that, and how are we to understand it?

The word Shed comes from the word that defines something that is forcibly taken, or the concept of destruction[11]. The Shed was created on Erev Shabbos as Shabbos began[12]. And as it was being created Shabbat entered and it remained incomplete[13]. That is difficult to comprehend since HaShem who was creating, cannot in any way miscalculate. What Chazal are teaching us is the following. Erev Shabbat as the day ended, was already after the sin of Adam. All things created then are in some way connected to the sin. The Shed is an incomplete being created in a world that has already been twisted into a shape different than its original form. So as a result of Adam’s sin it is incomplete. The purpose of the Shed is that when humans through their Bechira, make the world more incomplete, they can make that incompletion greater. That is the consequence of the human’s actions.

There is another aspect, which is that they represent Din. In this world, as we wrote above, Din is unable to reach completion, without the addition of Rachamim. The Shed does not have that Rachamim.

The Ariz”l explains this in the following manner[14]. Just as the entire world was created in a way of Din and Rachamim, so too man’s consort was created in these two ways. The original Chava was a creation of Din, of the attempt at perfection. But when Adam does not remain at that level, the Din demands the consequences, and becomes a power of destruction. It is something incomplete. She was not a helpmate.

But as HaShem ultimately creates the world with the addition of Rachamim, Chavah is recreated in a fashion of Rachamim. That is the Chavah which is a helpmate to Adam.

The Bnei Yissaschar[15] brings the Chazal, that Yakov was a microcosm of Adam. He then extends that idea, to explain why Yakov had two wives. Leah is the aspect of Din. She is parallel to the first Chavah. Rachel is the second Chavah, who inclueds the Rachamim. Yakov as the choice of the Avos, is able to bring even Leah- “Chavah Rishona” to completion.

Thus the final completion of the world is when we reach to a world where through the help of the second Chavah, we can reach a world of Din, and repair the damage to and by the first Chavah.
