The Chatzatzros

Written by Rabbi Rudman, 10/6/2019

This week’s Parsha discusses the final preparations for Klal Yisroel’s journey from Har Sinai to Eretz Yisroel. The last item that needed to be prepared for the travels was a method of communicating to the entire camp the travelling instructions. To facilitate that, HaShem commands Moshe to prepare silver ‘Chatzotzros’ – trumpets[1]. There was a different trumpet call for each aspect of the voyage.

In addition to this use during the travels through the desert, Chatzotzros were to be used on two other occasions. In the Bais HaMikdosh when festive Korbanos where brought, and in a time of danger to arouse the nation to Teshuva. Later in Devarim we learn that the Chatzotzros of Moshe for the travels were secreted away with the passing of Moshe. There are many aspects of these special instruments, both the unique ones from the time of Moshe, and the ones that were used in the Bais HaMikdosh. I would like to try to bring out some ideas about them.

In the writings of the Magid of Mezerich, the preeminent transmitter of the Torah of the Baal Shem Tov HaKadosh, there is a cryptic statement[2]. “The word Chatzotzros is an acronym for two half shapes.” Meaning the Chatzotzros represent something that is incomplete, but can be brought to completion. In addition, they are made of silver. In Lashon Hakodesh, the word for silver derives from the verb to desire[3]. When something is incomplete its natural inclination is to desire to be completed. What can we learn from these ideas about the Chatzotzros?

The Oheiv Yisroel (a disciple of the Noam Elimelech, himself a disciple of the Magid) writes the following[4]. Every conversation is made up of two halves, the speaker and the listener. In the words of the Maharal[5], there is the Mashpia – the one who gives over and influences, and the Mekabel – the vessel which accepts and is influenced. These two levels are also referred to as male and female. The male is the aspect of influencing and giving. The female is the aspect of receiving and being a vessel to accept. Every person at different times in their lives fulfills these functions alternatively.

Even within this structure, there is another level that joins them together. The Gemarra in Pesachim says[6], “More than the calf desires to receive, the cow desires to provide.” The greatest pleasure is to give to someone else. On some level that turns the giver into a receiver. This the greatest gift that the giver can receive, that there is someone willing to accept from him.

What is fascinating that in the example the Gemarra uses to describe the pleasure to give and that the giving is actually receiving, the giver is a female rather than a male. That might be to emphasize that having the opportunity to give, is actually receiving the greatest gift of all.

Moshe Rabbeinu connected both aspects. He was the vessel for the Torah that was given to him by HaShem. But he was the greatest giver, since he gave the Torah to Klal Yisroel. That is why he is called Rabbeinu – our teacher. So Moshe Rabbeinu was himself the two different halves of a complete whole. Therefore, Moshe was commanded to manufacture two ‘half shapes’, that through their blasts they could join the nation together to travel through the desert.

As we said, these two aspects, giving and receiving, are a complete whole. The Pasuk describes the creation of man as being both man and woman[7], both a giver and a receiver. Only with both of those aspects is man a complete creation. In the words of R’ Tzadok[8], who is also explaining the Magid, the Chatzotzros represent love. That is why they are made of silver, which is the material that represents desire to attach to someone. And that is why they are used in the Bais HaMikdosh, which is described as ‘The day of His happiness’. They represent the joining together of HaShem with Klal Yisroel, which is like a wedding.

Rav Hutner points out that in the commandment of the Chatzotzros, there is a unique reference to Shabbos[9]. It is called “The Day of Happiness”. On Yom Tov there is a commandment to be happy. It is not called the day of happiness, but it is the day of a commandment to be happy. Shabbos, there is not a commandment to be happy, but the Simcha is the essence of the day. The happiness of Shabbos is called Oneg[10]. Oneg is referred to in Chazal[11] as the acronym of the Pasuk, “A river came out of Eden, and watered the garden”. It is an extension of the happiness till it is an essential part of whom we are.

This happiness of Shabbos is apparent only when Shabbos begins[12]. That is the time of the marriage between the bride and the groom, as we say Lecha Dodi. That moment creates the happiness. But from there the happiness flows. The Mitzvah is to accept the Shabbos and allow that Simcha to continue throughout the Shabbos. That is the joining of the two sides of the Tzurah, which is the Chatzotzros, into a complete unit of constant giving and receiving. That is why the only time the Torah describes Shabbos as Simcha, is by the Chatzotzros.

However, there is another aspect to the Chatzotzros. That is the Mitzvah to use them in a time of danger to Klal Yisroel. How does that join together in one understanding with the other aspects?

The Rambam describes[13] the Mitzvah to blow the Chatzotzros as a recognition of Hand of HaShem in our lives. Someone who does not do that, and says the bad that happens is coincidence and the way of nature, is cruel and causes a person to only continue in his evil ways.

There are two ways a person can live their life. One can recognize that the world is connected to an upper realm. That is the Simcha of the Chatzotzros. But when we drown in the world of nature, we lose that connection to the upper realm. If nothing helps, then HaShem will remind us through events that are to teach us that the world is not a place of coincidence. In such a circumstance we use the Chatzotzros, to remind us of the connection between our world here and the spiritual realm.

There is another way of explaining this. The Gemarra says that on the days of fasting to repent for our sins we need to include the sinners also. The power of the Chatzotzros is to unify. Therefore on those days we blow the Chatzotzros[14].

Later in Devarim, we find the that on the last day of Moshe Rabbeinu’s life, he gathers together the nation. However, he does not use the Chatzotzros . Rashi explains[15] that since it was the last day of his life, there is no power on the day of death. What does that mean?

The Sfas Emes writes[16] that the ‘day of death’ is not what it seems on first reading. It is not the actual day of his death, but the day that Moshe sinned and death was decreed. That was the day that Moshe instead of speaking to the rock, smote it. A close examination of the sin, is that instead of Moshe using his voice to control the physical world, he used power to try to control it. Using his voice would have shown the Jewish people that the spiritual world can control the physical. That is joining the two parts together. Therefore, on the day that the consequence of not speaking became apparent, the Chatzotzros cannot be used.

The Netziv (Emek HaNetziv Vol 1 pg. 237) says that there are no Chatzotzros unless we are ‘before HaShem’ in the Bais HaMikdosh. We do not have that unifying aspect of being before HaShem. But we need to find the Simcha of the connection to HaShem, and the ability to unofy the entire Klal, as we did when we could use the Chatzotzros.
