Moshe’s Notebook - Parshas Massei

Written by Rabbi Rudman, 21/7/2019

The name of this week’s Parsha introduces us to one of the salient points that is being taught; the journeys and encampments of Klal Yisroel through the desert. Many explanations are said as to why the Torah needs to review them, but we will try to concentrate on one aspect.

The Pasuk writes[1], “And Moshe wrote the starting camp of their journeys as directed by HaShem; and these are the journeys by the starting camp.” The Pasuk repeats the words ‘starting point’ and ‘journey’ at the beginning and the end of the Pasuk. But even more, it switches the order. What does this mean?

The Ohr Hachaim points out another basic question on the Pasuk[2]. What is special that this is introduced by saying that Moshe wrote these Pesukim. Moshe wrote the entire Torah! We find this Pasuk in three other Pesukim, but in two contexts. At Matan Torah it says that Moshe wrote[3] “the words of the covenant”. Rashi says[4] that this refers to all of the events of the Torah from Bereishis till then, and all the Halachos that were taught at Marah. At the end of the Torah[5], twice it says that Moshe wrote the Torah. That is obviously referring to the complete Torah that he wrote to give to Klal Yisroel. We can understand that in those two places we are told that Moseh wrote the Torah from beginning to end. But here in the middle of the Torah what is it referring to?

There is a Machlokes in Gittin as to how Moshe wrote the Torah[6]. Was it written each section as it happened, and then at the end of the forty years all those sections were sown together? Or was it all written at the end? But according to either opinion, what was written here? This is not a Parsha that happened at one time, and Moshe wrote it? The Ohr HaChaim says something revolutionary[7]. There was a special command from HaShem that Moshe should write in a notebook each step in the journey. How does that fit with the two opinions in the Gemarra?

If you examine the words of the Ohr HaChaim, he is not involved in that discussion. He is not saying that Moshe wrote this as commanded by HaShem, and then added it to the Torah. This was a separate commandment from HaShem to write this in a separate booklet. Then, HaShem commanded Moshe to make that part of the Torah. Even more, the words were originally not the words of HaShem, but the words of Moshe. Only later, did HaShem authorize that those words should then be in the Torah.

This is fascinating, but what is this supposed to mean? What is this separate book that was commanded to be written? And why was this specifically commanded concerning the forty-two journeys through the desert?

The Kli Yakar answers the other question, about the double words and the inversion in the Pasuk, in three ways[8].  The third answer is that all of these journeys were extra. Really we were supposed to enter into Eretz Yisroel straight from Egypt. The ‘wings of eagles’ were to carry us from Ramses to Eretz Yisroel. Only because of the sins did we need to go through all of those encampments along the way. The original plan was to leave and travel, and never have to stop. That is the first part of the Pasuk. But that did not happen, so we travelled then had to stop. That is the second part of the Pasuk, the travels, with the encampments.

Possibly we can extend this idea. Since the travels were theoretically not supposed to happen, they were not written in the Torah, till Moshe added them as they happened. This is not to contradict what is clear in Chazal that the entire Torah was written before the creation of the world[9]. But even that Chazal still allows Klal Yisroel Bechira. The fact that it was written in fire, can be understood that it is written in a way of potential. (The four ‘elements’ that Chazal describe: fire, air, water, earth; are states of matter: energy, gas, liquid, solid. Fire is energy which is potential.) Thus each encampment was potential, and only written in Moshe’s words. At the end HaShem commanded it all to be written in the Torah.

But even this seemingly fall of Klal Yisroel has a positive aspect. In many Seforim[10] the forty-two journeys, represent the name of HaShem that has forty-two letters. (That is the Name that is spelled by the acrostic of the Tefilah of Rabbi Nechunyah ben HaKaneh, Ana B’Coach.) We can understand that even from the sins of Klal Yisroel there is a name of HaShem.

To add to this one last idea about Teshuva. This month is called Av. This means father. At the same time, it is the month of punishment, when all the bad things happen to Klal Yisroel. But we are meant to understand that what happens is from a father. It is not the punishment of vengeance, but as the Pasuk says[11], “As a father chastises a son, so HaShem chastises you”. That is why this is the month of fatherhood.

There is no punishment. From all HaShem does is created Torah and names of HaShem. We do not always see it, but we have to have Emunah. Klal Yisroel is only redeemed with Emunah.
