Look In The Mirror

Written by mestuart, 29/11/2018

I’ve changed the words in a song to help you understand what Yosef was going through. Let’s see how long it takes for you to guess which song it is

I've been staring right into the mirror,
Now my faith is getting clearer,
Slowly understanding why.
Every turn I take, every trail I track
Every path I make, every road leads back
To the One I know, But I can not go, where I long to be

If you haven’t gotten it yet, I’m sure you will now:
See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls me
And no one knows, how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I'll know, if I go there's just no telling how far I'll go

Moana got it, and so did Yosef. I’ll explain: The Passuk says that the opportune day came when Yosef entered the house to do his work. The Gemarah in Soteh explains this to mean that Yosef was actually about to give in to his desires, but an image of his father appeared to him. Mefarshim translate this in different ways- either it was literally his father or his own face that reminded him of his father, but whichever it was, one thing is for sure- He immediately understood how far he can go; all he had to do was hold himself back.

See, that’s what it’s like for all of us. We all have desires because we’re built in with a Yetzer Harah who tries convincing us to do things that we don’t really want to to do. Yosef shows us that our potential is endless, our challenge is to see that. So like Moana, we should all be blessed to see how far we can go.

What is something that’s holding you back from being an even greater version of yourself?
