The Aramaic of the Torah

Written by Rabbi Rudman, 11/11/2018

Parshas VaYetze is one  of two Sedarim in the Torah that is one entire section in a Sefer Torah[1]. There are no Parshiyos Pesuchos or Stumos. These two types of Parshiyos are characterized by white space where a specific number of spaces are left blank. Rashi teaches us[2] that these are to give us an opportunity to stop and review what we learnt. But when Yakov is forced to leave Eretz Yisroel, there is no break. This is to teach us that it is as if Yakov never takes a break. His journey is one circle from his leaving till his return. As soon as he leaves Eretz Yisroel, he is already returning. As it says in the beginning of VaYishlach[3], I only dwelt with Lavan temporarily.

The final stage of this circular journey is when Yakov leaves the orbit of Lavan and returns to Eretz Yisroel. This final break does not come easily. Lavan pursues Yakov, and does not allow to him to leave easily. There is an elaborate covenant that they make, and only then does Lavan abandon his pursuit of Yakov.[4]

Part of the treaty is the construction of a cairn of stones to delineate the border between them. This is called Galed. But the Torah here does something unusual. When Moshe is named, both the ibn Ezra[5] and the Ba’alei HaTosfos[6] tell us, that this is a Hebraized version of what his name was in Egyptian. The ibn Ezra even informs us of the Egyptian name, Munios. In the rest of the Torah the speech of all those who do not speak Lashon HaKodesh is rendered into Hebrew.

But here we are told that not only does Yakov call this place Galed; but that in Aramaic, the language of Lavan, Lavan called it Yagar Sahadusa. That is (almost[7]) an exact translation of Galed. Why here does the Torah depart from its regular usage of only Lashon HaKodesh?

In the Yerushalmi we learn[8] that in all three parts of Tanach, the language of Aramaic is used. The Gemarra in Megilla[9]even emphasizes that if someone thinks they are ‘improving’ the Torah by retranslating this back into Hebrew, that Sefer Torah is now unfit for public reading, and must be repaired. Why is this?

The formulation of the statement in the Yerushalmi is very interesting. It writes that Aramaic is found in all three parts of Tanach. This formulation that emphasizes that an idea is found in all three parts of Tanach is used a number of times[10]. What does this mean?

The idea of the three parts of Tanach is not just an accidental result of history. In the Gemarra in Shabbos[11], we are taught that the original structure of the Torah is a threefold Torah – Torah, Neviim, and Kesuvim. So when the Yerushalmi teaches us that the use of Aramaic also fits that structure it is teaching us something inherent about the Torah. What is this?

The world was originally created in Lashon HaKodesh[12]. When Adam sinned, he then began to speak Aramaic[13]. The sin of Adam was the mixing together of good and evil. That is the tree of the joint knowledge of good and evil. Kodesh means pure and unsullied. Aramaic is the language that is closest to Lashon HaKodesh, but is mixed up with other influences. Thus when Adam sins the appropriate language is Aramaic. (As the Rambam writes[14] that in Lashon HaKodesh there are no words for unclean things. This is parallel to that before the sin, there is no shame in any physical act, they are all Kodesh. Only after the sin do they take on shame, they become confused and intermingled with Yetzer Hara.)

The goal is to return to Lashon HaKodesh. Torah Sh’bichsav is given in Lashon HaKodesh. When the first Luchos are given we return to the state of before the sin. As it says in Tehilim[15], “I said you were as Bnei Elokim- angels.” All of Torah can be understood directly from the Luchos themselves. But when the sin of the Eigel takes place, as the Pasuk continues, “However, as Adam you will die.” When the second Luchos are given, they come with a lack of clarity. They require the process of Torah Sh’Bal Peh to get through the confusion to the clarity. The language for this Torah is Aramaic. All of the Torah is Kodesh, but when there is a lack of clarity, we need to go through the language of confusion to reach the truth of the Torah. That is why the Gemarra emphasizes that all three parts of the Torah contain Aramaic.

All of the actions of the Avos are a Siman- sign – for their descendants. Yakov in the house of Lavan, and then the departure, are a Siman for leaving Egypt[16]. As the Pasuk says[17], the culmination of Yetzias Mitzrayim was Matan Torah. The time of Sefiras HaOmer was to clarify the confusion of the Tumah of Egypt, and then to reach the clarity of the first Luchos. So too here.

Lavan catches up to Yakov at the border of Eretz Yisroel, the Land of Kedusha. Yakov has lived in Charaan, the foundation of Aramaic. There he brings out the Imahot and the Shevatim. When he arrives at the border of Eretz Yisroel, he describes it using Lashon HaKodesh. Lavan whose entire purpose is couched is his declaration, “These are my daughters and sons”; is claiming that Yakov cannot run away, and must remain in the confusion of Chutz La’Aretz and Aramaic. Therefore, he declaims it in Aramaic. Yakov emphasizes that he is not under the influence of Lavan anymore, he is completing his journey back to Eretz Yisroel, and therefore he says it Lashon HaKodesh. As the Seforno writes[18], Lavan then accepts this formulation, since he repeats it back in Lashon HaKodesh. The purpose of the Aramaic is to emphasize our goal, to remove the confusion of Aramaic, and reach the Kedusha of the language and the land.

The Pasuk in Yirmiyah which is in Aramaic fits this same pattern[19]. Rashi there learns[20] that it is a letter which Yirmiyahu sent to the exiles of Yechanya. The contents of that letter, is that when the people of Bavel, who spoke Aramaic, claim that HaShem is not true, this is your response. Once again, this is an answer in the place of confusion of Aramaic, outside of the land of Kedusha, to clarify from within the confusion.

In Kesuvim, the entire contents of Sefer Daniel fits this pattern. It is the Sefer of the Galus of Klal Yisroel in Bavel. It is the clarification of the might of HaShem within Galus. Therefore, all the parts of the Torah need to have some section in Aramaic to emphasize what our goal in learning Torah after the second Luchos is, to reach the clarity of Kedusha in all aspects of the Torah.

R’ Yonasan Eibscitz in the Yaaros Devash[21] adds one more point. Galed is the place of Eliyahu HaNavi. The Pasuk says in Yirmiyah, “Is there not a balm or a physician in Gilad?” Eliyahu is the Navi of the Geulah, as is said at the end of Malachi. Death itself is the result of the confusion of good and bad in the person himself, that Adam brought about by eating from the Eitz HaDa’as. Eliyahu is the Navi of the Geulah and Techiyas HaMeisim. Eliyahu himself does not die. Gilad is the place of clarity. This clarity arises from Kedusha, the beginning of which is the entrance to Eretz Yisroel, the land of Kedusha. Gilad is one of the entrances to our land, where the Kedusha begins.

R Tzadok HaCohen M’Lublin[22] adds to this the following Sifri. When Moshe at the end of his life is shown all of Eretz Yisroel, he is shown the Gilad. The Sifri says that this is a name of the Bais HaMikdosh. The Bais HaMikdosh is where we take all of the physical objects of the world and bring them to Kedusha. Yakov is the one who begins to repair that aspect of the sin of Adam. Yakov says to Lavan, “Give me my wife so I can have relations with her and have children.” Chazal say, “Even the lowest person would not say such a thing!” Only someone who sees no shame in the physical things of the world, where all is Kedusha can say that. Only someone who is like Adam before the sin can say that. So Yakov who can ask for his wife in the way that he did, is the one who corrects the Aramaic of Lavan into Lashon HaKodesh, at the entrance to the land of Kedusha.

May our journey through all the Tumah outside the Eretz Yisroel, whether actually or virtually, be with no break from the Kedusha, and Eliyahu HaGiladi return us to the Gilad of the Bais HaMikdosh with the purity of Yakov.
